Who can install a domestic roller shutter?

Roller shutters can be installed by competent DIY installers or tradespeople with suitable tools and experience. Accurate measurements, secure fixings and correct alignment are essential. Any mains electrical work must comply with applicable UK electrical regulations. You can find the relevant installation guides here.

Can domestic roller shutters be fitted over outward-opening windows and doors?

Yes, provided there is sufficient clearance between the window or door and the shutter curtain, including any projecting handles or hardware. Headroom of the box height (137-180mm) + 30mm minimum clearance is recommended. For external installations with outward opening windows we strongly recommend Somfy RS100 io motors as they have integrated obstacle detection, avoiding damage to the motor and shutter slats in case a window or door is left open during operation.

What allowances are added for surface fitting?

For surface fitting, we automatically add 110mm to the specified structural opening width for the guide tracks. For the shutter height, we add the appropriate shutter box height (137x137mm – 180x180mm depending on height) to the overall shutter height. Enter the structural opening dimensions without adding these allowances manually.

What is the difference between surface fit and reveal fit?

Surface fit positions the shutter around the opening, with the guide tracks either side and shutter box above the structural opening. Reveal fits position the shutter within the opening. Our configuration tool automatically calculates allowances based on specified structural opening, and selected installation type.

How do I measure for a domestic roller shutter?

Measure the structural opening width and height in millimetres, taking measurements at several points to check for variations.

Surface Fit: Measure the opening width and height. Our online configuration tool automatically adds 110mm to the width for the guide tracks and the appropriate shutter box height (137x137mm – 180x180mm) above the opening.

Reveal Fit: Measure the opening at several points and use the narrowest width to ensure the shutter fits within the reveal. Our configuration tool deducts approximately 5mm from the specified width for fitting tolerance. For ‘flush reveal fit’ measure the reveal depth to ensure there is sufficient space for the shutter box.

Always check that the opening is reasonably level and square before ordering.

Motors, Controls & Power

Which roller shutter motor should I choose?

Standard 240V motors are suitable for most installations. Somfy RS100 io motors offer additional features including obstacle detection and are recommended for outward-opening windows and doors. Solar-powered systems avoid the need for a mains electrical connection, while manual-override motors provide backup operation during power cuts, and are recommended if entry / exit required.

What happens to an electric roller shutter during a power cut?

Standard mains-powered roller shutters cannot be operated during a power cut. A motor with manual override allows the shutter to be operated manually using the supplied crank mechanism. Somfy RS100 motors do not have a manual override option. Solar-powered systems use a rechargeable battery and do not require mains power for normal operation.

Which roller shutter slat type do I need?

Our standard 42mm insulated slats are a lightweight, multi-purpose solution suitable for most domestic applications except garage doors. Larger openings where additional security or wind-resistance is required, especially if open on both sides, may require 37mm extruded, or 55mm or 77mm insulated slats. Suitability depends on the opening dimensions and intended use and requirements. Get in touch with details of your project if in doubt which option you require.

What size will my shutter header box be?

The standard 42mm insulated aluminium roller shutter uses a box size determined by the total shutter drop:

Orders, Payment & Delivery

How can I track my order?

Our couriers email or text delivery information and tracking details once your order is dispatched. If you haven’t received anything, please check your spam folder for correspondence from Proovia or APC couriers.

Which courier do you use?

We generally use APC couriers for orders with components under 2 metres, and Proovia couriers for orders with components over 2 metres. Once dispatched, customers receive notification from their respective couriers to confirm delivery arrangements.

How long does it take to receive a made-to-measure roller shutter?

Standard manufacturing and dispatch lead time for made to measure products is approximately four calendar weeks from order confirmation and payment. Timescales may vary depending on the specification and order volume. Delivery arrangements are confirmed via our couriers once ready to dispatch.
