Q: What Size Roller Shutter Box Will I Need?

Our standard 42mm insulated aluminium roller shutters use a compact aluminium shutter box. The required box size is determined by the total shutter drop (height) . The domestic roller shutter is a versatile product that can be configured to suit a range of applications. Primarily designed as an all-purpose solution for security, insulation and privacy (100% blackout) for residential windows and doors, they are also ideal solutions for internal use and general closures around the home and garden.

Made from lightweight aluminium, the powdercoated box houses 42mm insulated aluminium slats. The units come as an assembled roller box containing the slat curtain, and two guide channels, along with fixtures and selected control system. The box slots into and is supported by the screw-fixed guide tracks.

How Do I Measure For My Roller Shutter?

Measure the structural opening width and height in millimetres, from one side of the opening to the other and from top to bottom.

Take measurements at several points to check for variations and ensure the opening is reasonably level and square.

The dimensions entered into our online configurator should be the structural opening dimensions, not the overall manufactured shutter dimensions.

Surface Fit (Mounted Around the Opening)

Measure the width and height of the structural opening.
Our configurator automatically adds 110mm to the overall width to accommodate the guide tracks.
The appropriate shutter box height is automatically added above the opening.
Do not manually add the guide-track or box allowances to the dimensions entered.

Reveal Fit (Mounted Within the Opening)

Measure the opening width at several points and use the narrowest measurement.
Our configurator automatically deducts approximately 5mm from the entered width to provide fitting tolerance.
The shutter box and guide tracks are positioned within the opening, reducing the available clear opening.
For flush reveal fitting, the reveal must have sufficient depth to accommodate the shutter box.
For proud reveal fitting, only sufficient depth for the guide tracks is required, as the shutter box projects beyond the reveal.

Installation Requirements

The shutter must be installed plumb and square to ensure smooth operation. If the opening is uneven or out of square, suitable packers or shims should be used to achieve correct alignment during installation.

What Is The Difference Between Surface Fit And Reveal Fit?

The installation type determines where the roller shutter box and guide tracks are positioned in relation to the structural opening.

Surface Fit — Mounted Around the Opening

The roller shutter is installed on the surrounding wall or suitable fixing surface, with the shutter box positioned above the opening and the guide tracks positioned on either side.

The shutter assembly sits outside the structural opening.
The opening remains largely unobstructed when the shutter is raised.
Our configurator automatically adds 110mm to the opening width and the appropriate shutter box height to the overall shutter height.
Suitable fixing surfaces and sufficient surrounding space are required.

Surface fitting is generally preferred where adequate space is available around the opening.

Reveal Fit — Mounted Within the Opening

The roller shutter is installed inside the structural opening, with the shutter box at the top and the guide tracks positioned within the side reveals.

The shutter assembly sits within the opening.
The guide tracks reduce the available clear width.
The shutter box occupies space at the top of the opening.
Our configurator automatically deducts approximately 5mm from the entered opening width for fitting tolerance.
The reveal must provide adequate depth, clearance and suitable fixing surfaces.

Which installation type should I choose?

Surface fitting is generally preferable where there is sufficient space around the opening. Reveal fitting may be appropriate where external space is limited or a recessed appearance is preferred.

The correct installation type depends on the opening dimensions, surrounding structure, available headroom and any projecting windows, doors or handles.

Always enter the structural opening dimensions into the configurator and select the intended installation type. The relevant dimensional adjustments are applied automatically.

240V Hard-Wired Motor

A mains-powered motor operated using a wired wall switch.

Straightforward operation without a wireless remote.
Suitable for domestic windows, doors and other openings.

Cannot operate during a power cut.

240V RF Remote-Controlled Motor

A mains-powered motor operated using a wireless radio-frequency (RF) remote control.

Electrical Requirements

All mains-powered motors require a 240V electrical supply, connected using either:

A suitable 3-pin plug.
A fused connection unit (FCU) with a 3A fuse.

Electrical connections must comply with applicable UK electrical regulations and the motor manufacturer’s instructions.

Power Cuts

Standard mains-powered motors, including RF and Somfy RS100 io systems, cannot operate without electricity. Manual-override motors can be operated using their crank mechanism, while solar-powered systems operate from a rechargeable battery.
